Bòlit. Contemporary Art Centre. Girona is a cultural centre whose mission is to put together programmes to research, produce and exhibit contemporary art projects by national and international creators and professionals from other fields of knowledge with strong ties to the local context.

An active, dynamic player, Bòlit organises programmes of exhibitions and related integrated activities, such as workshops, series of talks, urban actions, series of screenings, specific proposals and works in progress designed to get civil society involved right from the start.

Bòlit works closely on the ground with initiatives and programmes carried out in the province of Girona to promote collaboration and project exchange. Creative production at the centre is linked to other contexts and international research and creation spaces.

Bòlit is currently carrying out its research and production projects from two temporary spaces it has used since it was set up: Sala de la Rambla (Bòlit-LaRambla) and Capella de Sant Nicolau (Bòlit-SantNicolau).

Housed in emblematic buildings in Girona old town, these two spaces were made available to Bòlit by Girona City Council while work continues on the new building near the Parc del Migdia. Between October 2008 and February 2010 it carried out its research and production projects from Niu, a temporary structure designed by Santiago Cirugeda.

Since it was first set up, Bòlit has had its office on the second floor of the Mercè Cultural Centre in Girona.

The name of the Center, Bòlit, has metaphorical connotations. Without a established historical origin, bòlit is a popular game strongly rooted in Sant Narcís, one of the most popular quarters of Girona, where every year the Bòlit World Competition is celebrated, given that bòlit is also a universal game, played in locations like India and Pakistan. It is a sort of baseball, played with bats and a manufactured wood ball (bòlit), which has to be kept in movement in the air, non stop, batting, in a permanent "controversial conversation" between teams in competition.

Right from the start, when the word "bòlit" was chosen to designate Girona's contemporary art centre, the aim has been to work out of and for the local context. This documentary video, which links the Centre's identity with its territory, joins the series of artistic proposals of work in progress in the territory which have been carried out at Bòlit Contemporary Art Centre over the last two years. The idea of the video is to draw attention to the light-hearted, traditional etymology of the name of the Centre, which is linked to a traditional Girona activity.
