The tender for the preliminary project for the new Bòlit. Contemporary Art Centre building on the site of the former city barracks was awarded in November 2010 to architect Josep Llinàs, who heads a team made up of Philipp Gasteiger, Jorge Martin, Llorenç Mestre, Enric Torner and Roger Subirà.
This geometrically shaped building features a double skin in keeping with energy sustainability criteria. With its main entrance on Carrer Emili Grahit, the building will strike a dynamic contrast with the future provincial library. The architecture takes its cue from the size of the galleries, especially the largest, which plays a key role in determining the shape of the building as a whole. The architects took particular care to ensure the ground floor, which will house the building's most public area, is as accessible as possible, in terms of both the use and visibility of the different services on offer for its different lines of work.
It will include a study centre for research and reference, multifunctional spaces for meetings and exchange, rooms for educational projects, an auditorium, and small spaces for presentations and production with artists in residence.
