Niu

A site-specific project created and carried out by architect Santiago Cirugeda and his studio, Recetas Urbanas, in the form of an ephemeral architectural piece on the rooftop of Bòlit-LaRambla.

This structure comprises four containers covered in leaves, branches and fabric to look like a nest and forms part of the Lorries, Containers and Collectives project, which involved making fresh use of public housing resources, since the containers were former housing units from a gypsy settlement provided by Zaragoza Council's Urban Redevelopment Agency.

The project awarded the containers to different collectives throughout Spain to find new uses for them and turn them into work spaces or bases. Some of the containers went to collectives in rural areas (Straddle3, Nautarquía, Alga); others, to urban areas (Proyecta, Caldo de Cultivo, Un lugar de creación). El Niu was the only one involving a public administration.

The Nest fitted out the containers as work spaces and equipped them with the necessary furniture and material to carry out all the activities it was designed for, including workshops, screenings and courses, amongst others.

This construction provided the Centre with the temporary infrastructure it needed to run activities for artistic research and action with a whole series of national and international artists invited to work for Girona from Girona.

Created especially for Bòlit, el Niu formed part of the projects which Santiago Cirugeda presented at the 2008 Venice Architecture Biennale, Out There: Architecture Beyond Building, as a guest artist for the experimental architecture exhibition in the Italian pavilion.

El Niu was taken down in February 2010.

The workshop will start with a screening of a selection of audiovisual creations: independent documentaries, creative video and media archaeology, mostly from the OVNI [Unidentified Video Observatory] archives (www.desorg.org).

We propose to start by discussing a series of videos on a tightrope between social criticism / reflection and an introspective questioning of human nature: dual aspects of a single reality which have often been dissociated by our prevailing western tradition, thereby depriving us of the means of deepening our critical regard, not only on ourselves and our society, but also on the role of video as a creator of visions and imageries.

The development of consumer technology has brought with it an increasing trivialisation of the image, a saturation of visual stimuli, and a masking of other realities. However, it has also given us video as an everyday tool with which we can reflect on the realities of our lives and our dreams, and with which we can create our own imagery; it has heralded the arrival of an independent visual discourse, and thus provided access to non-cloned visions. The workshop aims to explore and consider these possibilities through screenings and discussions of video artworks, interventions by guest artists, and contributions from participants.

There will be screenings and discussions on videos that explore the mechanisms of social and identitarian control, the violence and conflicts of globalization; the image as a spectacular mirage, media deconstruction; the devices of otherness (migration and the creation of the "other"), inner experiences, initiation journeys, accounts of dreams, transits towards other realities, indigenous and Islamic rhizomes, and much more.
